Kilvickeon Beach is a captivating, lesser-known gem nestled on the south coast of the Isle of Mull, near Bunessan, offering a serene and unspoiled coastal experience. This quiet beach features a beautiful stretch of white sand, often subtly divided into two sections by interesting rock formations. The clear, turquoise waters are ideal for paddling on calm days, inviting a refreshing dip, and visitors often find themselves with a profound sense of peace in its secluded setting.
A distinctive sight just offshore, mid-beach, is the impressive tidal island of Garbh Eilean (“rough island”) with its striking basalt columns, which can be explored on foot at low tide. Access to Kilvickeon Beach is considered moderate, primarily due to the track leading to the car park which can be very rough and potholed, demanding careful driving. From this parking area, it’s then a relatively easy walk of about 10-15 minutes across farmland to the shoreline.
The surrounding area is rich in history and wildlife, with frequent sightings of seals, otters, and various seabirds. The beach takes its name from the nearby atmospheric ruins of Kilvickeon Church and graveyard, dating back to the 12th century, adding a profound historical dimension to any visit to this serene coastal spot.
