Tomsleibhe Bothy is a remote, unlocked mountain shelter located on the Isle of Mull, specifically near the head of Glen Forsa at the foot of Beinn Talaidh. It stands as the sole bothy on Mull maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA), a charity dedicated to preserving these basic shelters for public use. Bothies offer a unique wilderness experience, providing a simple, free refuge for hillwalkers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the wilder parts of Scotland.

As a typical bothy, Tomsleibhe provides fundamental accommodation: four walls and a roof to offer shelter from the elements. While some bothies include a stove or fireplace, bothy users are generally expected to bring their own fuel, as well as a sleeping bag, mat, and cooking stove, viewing a stay as essentially camping without a tent. Facilities are extremely basic, with no electricity, piped water, or formal toilets; a spade is usually provided for burying human waste away from the bothy and water sources, adhering to the bothy code.

The appeal of Tomsleibhe Bothy lies in its truly wild and isolated setting, offering a profound sense of solitude and immersion in Mull’s rugged landscape. The surrounding area, deep within the mountains and glens, is rich in natural beauty and provides opportunities for wildlife spotting, including golden eagles. Visitors are reminded to adhere to the “Bothy Code,” which emphasizes respect for other users, the bothy itself, its surroundings, and any agreements with the estate, particularly regarding stag and hind stalking seasons (August 15 – February 15).

Reaching Tomsleibhe Bothy typically involves a walk or mountain bike ride through the glen, offering a rewarding journey into the island’s interior. Despite its simplicity, the bothy often provides a logbook for visitors to record their experiences, fostering a shared sense of adventure among those who seek out these remote havens. It stands as a testament to the enduring tradition of bothying, offering a glimpse into a more elemental form of outdoor living.
