Tobermory Ferry Port, located on the northern coast of the Isle of Mull, serves as a vital link connecting the island to the Scottish mainland via Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), this route is particularly convenient for those travelling from the north or wishing to explore the wild, remote Ardnamurchan. The crossing typically takes around 35 minutes, making it one of the shorter inter-island connections. While it’s a “Turn Up and Go” service where you don’t reserve specific sailings, CalMac strongly recommends purchasing tickets in advance, especially for vehicles, as pre-booking is advised to ensure carriage. It’s also worth noting that the port connects with local bus services to Craignure, providing further travel options around Mull.
The port is well-equipped with essential facilities for travellers, including a ticket office, waiting area, and public toilets, along with car parking. Free Wi-Fi is also available. During the summer timetable (typically late March to mid-October), there are up to seven crossings per day, while a winter timetable operates with adjusted schedules. It’s crucial for visitors to check the official CalMac website for the most up-to-date timetable information and service status, as sailings can be affected by weather or operational issues. For vehicle passengers, CalMac advises arriving at least 30 minutes before departure, and foot passengers should aim for 10 minutes prior.
