Scallastle Forest, nestled near Craignure on the Isle of Mull, offers a very attractive walking experience through regenerating woodland, providing a wonderful contrast to the island’s more rugged coastal and mountainous landscapes. Once a dense timber plantation, this area is now undergoing a significant transformation, with native species like birch and oak making a comeback, creating a richer and more diverse habitat. The well-maintained forest tracks lead visitors through a tranquil environment, offering glimpses of the surrounding hills, including distant views of Dun da Ghaoithe, Mull’s only Corbett, and stretching across the Sound of Mull to the mainland. It’s an ideal spot for a refreshing stroll or a more invigorating hike, easily accessible for those arriving at Craignure ferry terminal.
The main draw for many visitors to Scallastle Forest is its engaging circular walk, which meanders alongside the picturesque Scallastle River. This trail, approximately 4.75km (3 miles) in length and taking around 1.5 hours, features charming waterfalls as the river tumbles through the landscape. While parts of the trail involve forest tracks, there’s an optional loop that becomes steeper, rougher, and potentially boggy, leading up and down both sides of the river, offering a more challenging and immersive experience. It’s advisable to wear appropriate footwear, especially if attempting the steeper sections, to fully enjoy the natural beauty and the sound of the cascading water.
Beyond the scenic trails, Scallastle Forest is a valuable habitat for local wildlife, contributing to Mull’s reputation as “Eagle Island.” While specific sightings vary, the regenerating woodland and river environment can support a variety of birdlife, including smaller woodland species, and offers a chance to spot the island’s iconic white-tailed eagles or golden eagles soaring overhead. Red deer may also be observed within the wider forest areas. Visitors should note that the traditional Scallastle Forest car park is now closed; access to the walk is primarily on foot from Craignure, around a 10-minute walk from the public car park in the village, making it a convenient option for those arriving by ferry.
