The “Coffee Bean” is a striking and easily recognizable feature of Fionnphort Beach, located on the western tip of the Isle of Mull. This massive granite boulder, also sometimes called the “split rock,” sits prominently on the beach, making it hard to miss. Its distinctive shape and size make it a popular landmark and a great spot for taking photos. It’s a key feature of the beautiful scenery in this area.
The pink granite of the Coffee Bean is part of the Ross of Mull Granite, which is well-exposed in the area. The granite’s pink color, caused by the presence of potassium feldspar, is especially striking in the setting sun. Just south of the nearby ferry slipway, you can also see interesting intrusions of darker grey diorite rock cutting through the granite, adding to the geological interest of the area.
Fionnphort Beach, where the Coffee Bean is located, is a popular spot for travelers, especially those waiting for or returning from the ferry to Iona. The beach is easily accessible by car and offers stunning views of Mull’s rugged landscape. There are also dog-friendly cafes and a local shop nearby, making it a convenient and scenic place to visit.
