Tobermory High School is a unique 2-18 island school, serving the communities of Tobermory and Dervaig for its Early Learning Centre and primary department, while its secondary department draws pupils from most of the Isle of Mull, and even some from the Ardnamurchan peninsula via placing requests. The school prides itself on being an innovative learning community with a relentless drive for quality learning and teaching, aiming for high levels of progression for every student. It fosters a positive learning relationship between staff and students, promoting core values such as respect, resilience, confidence, creativity, and collaboration. The school is actively working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School, having achieved “Bronze: Rights Committed” status, which emphasizes recognizing children’s rights and nurturing positive attitudes to diversity.
The school is currently embarking on an exciting phase with plans for a new £43 million 2-18 campus at Tobermory South, which will combine early learning, primary, and secondary education. This new campus aims to provide enhanced educational benefits, modern facilities, and improved sports and leisure opportunities, contributing significantly to the island’s economic development. Tobermory High School also emphasizes independent learning, with pupils having opportunities to plan their own lessons. It maintains strong links with Argyll College, offering a wider range of courses and work-based learning opportunities for senior students. The school actively involves its pupils in wider achievement through a house system (Ulva, Staffa, Iona) that fosters community spirit and healthy competition, as well as participation in various awards and community fundraising initiatives.
