Kilmore Cemetery, also known as the Old Parish Churchyard of Kilcolmkill, offers a profound journey into Mull’s ancient past, situated on a knoll just outside the village of Dervaig. This historically rich site contains the subtle turf-covered remains of a medieval church, which once stood as one of the seven medieval parish churches across the island, notably annexed to Iona Abbey in the early 15th century. Its quiet, elevated position provides a tangible link to centuries of spiritual life and community history in North Mull, reflecting its long-standing significance as a sacred burial ground.
The cemetery is a treasure trove of historical grave markers, featuring a collection of stone slabs dating primarily from the 16th and 17th centuries. While many have succumbed to the elements, some still bear discernable inscriptions, crests, and shields, offering glimpses into the lives of past generations. Among its most remarkable features is a distinctive 14th-15th century grave slab, a fine example of the Iona school of carving, depicting a sword (missing its hilt) flanked by plant-scrolls and shears at its foot. This artifact underscores the artistic and cultural connections of Mull to the wider Hebridean region.
A particularly poignant aspect of Kilmore Cemetery is its role as the final resting place for victims of maritime tragedies. By the entrance gate, several graves commemorate unknown sailors, casualties of wars at sea, whose bodies were tragically washed ashore on the surrounding beaches and coves. This unique feature highlights the island’s enduring relationship with the sea and serves as a solemn memorial to those lost. The combination of ancient church history, historically significant grave art, and these compelling maritime war graves makes Kilmore Cemetery a uniquely powerful and reflective site on the Isle of Mull.
