Bunessan Parish Church, nestled within the heart of Bunessan village on the Isle of Mull, holds a rich history dating back to its construction in 1804. Built by local mason James Morrison, it replaced an older Kilvickeon church, with some of the original stones repurposed in its new design. This plain, oblong building, characterised by its white-harled rubble masonry and Gothic windows, has undergone various renovations, with its current interior largely reflecting work from 1908. It stands as a modest yet significant historical landmark in the village.
The church is more than just a place of worship; it serves as a central hub for the Bunessan community. Its facilities include an amalgamated vestry and meeting room, complete with a kitchen area, which facilitates weekly coffee mornings and various other community events. Bunessan Parish Church is part of the larger Parish of Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon, often linked with Iona and the wider Ross of Mull churches, reflecting a connected spiritual community across the south-west of Mull.
Bunessan Parish Church holds services on alternate Sundays at 2:30 pm, usually sharing a minister with St Ernan’s Church in Creich, Fionnphort. The church is generally always open, welcoming visitors for quiet contemplation or to appreciate its simple beauty and the fascinating old names carved into its rear stalls. The village of Bunessan itself is also historically significant as the namesake for the tune of the beloved hymn “Morning has Broken.”
