St Ronan’s Church on Iona is a historic medieval ruin dating from the 13th century. It is believed to have served as the island’s parish church until the Scottish Reformation in 1560, when many such churches were abandoned or fell into disuse. The church is built of local red and grey stone and features the simple, sturdy architecture typical of small rural parish churches of the period. Though roofless and weathered by time, the stone walls remain largely intact, allowing visitors to appreciate its original layout and structure.

The site holds significant historical and spiritual value for the island and its community. Situated close to the more famous Iona Abbey and Iona Nunnery, St Ronan’s Church represents an important element of Iona’s rich ecclesiastical heritage. The surrounding burial ground contains a number of gravestones dating back several centuries, which offer insights into the island’s past inhabitants and their connections to the church. The peaceful setting, with views over the island’s rugged landscape, lends a contemplative atmosphere that draws pilgrims and visitors alike.

Today, St Ronan’s Church is maintained as a protected historic site, accessible to the public year-round. While it no longer functions as an active place of worship, it remains a meaningful landmark reflecting Iona’s deep Christian traditions and medieval history. Visitors can explore the ruins and reflect on the centuries of faith, community, and continuity that have shaped this iconic part of the Hebrides.
