Island Castaways Craignure

Castaways is more than just a shop; it’s a vital part of the Mull and Iona community’s commitment to sustainability and local enterprise. Run by the Mull and Iona Community Trust (MICT), it is one of three such charity shops on the island, with others located in Bunessan and a summer shop in Tobermory. These shops are a cornerstone of the Mull and Iona Environmentally Sensitive Solutions (MESS) project, which aims to reduce waste and promote reuse and recycling across the islands, bringing both environmental and economic benefits.

The Craignure Castaways shop, like its counterparts, functions as a treasure trove of pre-loved goods. It offers a wide variety of items including clothing and accessories for all ages, a large selection of books, DVDs, and music, and a diverse range of household goods, bric-a-brac, and collectibles. The shop also stocks PAT-tested electrical items and has limited space for furniture, with a larger selection often available in their Craignure yard. Donations are rigorously quality-checked, ensuring that only good condition items are sold, which helps raise funds for the broader community initiatives of MICT.

Beyond its retail function, Castaways plays a significant role in fostering community spirit and providing opportunities. It relies heavily on local volunteers who help with sorting donations, creating eye-catching displays, serving customers, and even listing items online.
