Salen Pier, located on the picturesque Sound of Mull, holds a rich history as a pivotal transportation hub for the Isle of Mull. Historically, it served as a crucial stopping point for mailboat services travelling between Oban and Tobermory, acting as the primary disembarkation point for goods and passengers heading to the south of the island. Its significance as a bustling connection point waned after 1964, when the new Craignure pier and a dedicated car ferry service altered Mull’s main maritime links, leading to a period of reduced activity for Salen Pier.
However, after a period of dereliction, Salen Pier has undergone a sympathetic restoration to its original design since 2007, revitalising its role as a functional and appealing waterfront asset. Today, it stands as a beautifully refurbished working pier, offering renewed opportunities for both private and commercial usage. This restoration has allowed historic vessels, such as the iconic paddle steamer PS Waverley, to once again visit the pier, marking a significant return to its heritage as a passenger landing.
Beyond its historical and renewed operational significance, Salen Pier now also serves as a leisure destination and a base for unique holiday accommodations. It provides an excellent vantage point for enjoying the stunning views across the Sound of Mull and Salen Bay. The pier is a testament to community efforts to preserve and enhance Mull’s infrastructure, blending its past importance with new roles that contribute to the island’s vibrant tourism and local activities.
