Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse, meaning “Stranger’s Point” in Scottish Gaelic, is a captivating and historically significant beacon located just north of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. First established in 1857, this traditional lighthouse was designed by the renowned engineers Thomas and David Stevenson, part of the famous lighthouse-building family. It stands as a testament to maritime heritage, marking the southwestern side of the northwestern entrance to the Sound of Mull and guiding vessels safely for over a century. The lighthouse itself is a picturesque 19-meter white masonry tower with a distinctive black lantern, situated on a small islet connected to the former keepers’ cottages by a bridge, creating an iconic coastal scene.

For visitors, the journey to Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse is an integral part of the experience, as it’s only accessible on foot via a beautiful coastal path from Tobermory. This walk, approximately 1 to 1.3 miles (around 2 km) in length, winds along the steep, wooded coastline, offering continuously stunning views across the Sound of Mull towards the rugged Ardnamurchan Peninsula on the mainland, as well as glimpses of Tobermory Harbour. While the path can be narrow and sometimes muddy in places, it has been recently upgraded, making it a popular and rewarding stroll for all who enjoy dramatic scenery and fresh sea air. The remote, off-grid setting of the lighthouse and its now privately owned, beautifully renovated former keepers’ cottages adds to the sense of tranquil seclusion.

The area around Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The rich waters of the Sound of Mull are excellent for spotting porpoises, dolphins, seals, and the elusive otters along the rocky shorelines. The coastal views and a variety of habitats also make it a fantastic spot for birdwatching, with seabirds and various other species frequenting the area. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful walk, a chance to capture breathtaking photographs, or hoping for a wildlife encounter, Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse offers a truly immersive experience in Mull’s natural and maritime beauty.
