Dun Ban is a rugged fortification situated on a high rocky plateau about 400 meters south-south-west of Quinish Point. The fort’s location is a classic example of utilizing difficult terrain for protection; it is defended on all but the eastern side by steep, almost vertical rock faces ranging from 7 to 13 meters in height. This natural inaccessibility reduced the need for artificial defences, allowing the builders to focus their efforts on the vulnerable eastern approach.
The fort itself is irregular in shape, measuring approximately 58 meters by 32 meters internally. While much of the original stonework has collapsed over time, several stretches of the outer facing-stones and the rubble core of the wall remain visible, indicating that the ramparts were once up to 3 meters thick. A distinct gap in the debris on the south-east side marks the original entrance, which would have been the primary access point for inhabitants and livestock.
Visitors to Dun Ban can explore the layout of this ancient stronghold and appreciate the strategic logic of its placement. The site offers commanding views of the surrounding coastline, essential for monitoring sea traffic in the Iron Age. It remains a quiet and atmospheric site, perfect for those looking to explore the lesser-known archaeological gems of the Quinish peninsula.
