Dun Bhuirg is a spectacular, unexcavated site located on the rugged Ardmeanach peninsula, overlooking the north shore of Loch Scridain. It sits on the edge of a sheer cliff, using the precipitous drop as an impregnable defense against attack from the water. The site is larger and more complex than many of its neighbours, with the turf-covered foundations of the walls estimated to be over 4 meters thick, hinting at a structure of significant power and prestige.
Although the site has not been archaeologically dug, exposed sections of the masonry reveal fascinating details. Most notably, the remains of a flight of stairs can be seen within the wall structure. This rare feature suggests that the dun originally had a second storey or a high parapet walk, indicating a sophisticated level of architecture. The interior is filled with debris, likely concealing the well-preserved floors and hearths of the original dwelling.
Accessing Dun Bhuirg requires a walk into one of Mull’s wildest landscapes, often as part of the route to MacCulloch’s Fossil Tree. The ruin stands as a testament to the chieftains who once ruled this coast. The combination of the massive, thick foundations and the evidence of internal stairs makes it one of the most intriguing unexcavated sites on the island.
