Dun Haunn is a dramatic promontory dun located on the remote Treshnish headland, near the abandoned village of Haunn. The site is a masterclass in using natural defense; it is perched on a cliff-top projection protected by sheer 40-meter drops on most sides. The artificial defenses consist of a main wall enclosing the small summit (10.5m by 7.5m) and two outer walls or “arcs” that protect the landward approach, creating a “defence-in-depth” system rarely seen on smaller duns.
Today, these walls are reduced to low, grassy banks and ridges. The harsh Atlantic weather has eroded much of the structure, but the layout is still readable in the landscape. The outer ramparts would have served to slow down attackers and provide layers of protection for the central citadel. The site feels wild and exposed, a true outpost on the edge of the world.
The walk to Dun Haunn is a highlight for many visitors to Mull, offering incredible opportunities for wildlife spotting, including sea eagles and otters. The ruins provide a destination and a historical dimension to the hike, connecting the natural beauty of the Treshnish Isles with the human story of survival on this rugged coast.
