Dun I, pronounced “Dun Ee,” is the highest point on the small but historically significant Isle of Iona. Standing at 101 metres (333 ft) above sea level, the name translates from the Gaelic as “The Hill of Iona,” reflecting its prominent status on the island. This ancient landmark, once an Iron Age hill fort, offers a short but rewarding climb for visitors and pilgrims, providing a unique vantage point from which to view the entire island and its surrounding seascape.
The summit of Dun I is renowned for its breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views. From the top, on a clear day, visitors can enjoy expansive vistas across the sea to neighboring islands, including Mull, Staffa, the Treshnish Isles, and as far as Coll and Tiree. This elevated perspective allows for a full appreciation of Iona’s landscape, from the famous white sandy beaches of the north to the historic sites of the south, offering a profound sense of peace and a fresh perspective on the island.
Located just below the summit is a small, natural rock pool known as Tobar na h-Aoise, or the Well of Age. Steeped in folklore, this well is traditionally associated with the power to restore youth or grant new beginnings. Visitors often partake in a simple ritual of washing their faces in its waters, connecting with the island’s deep spiritual and mythical heritage. The ascent to Dun I is a key part of the Iona experience, blending natural beauty with spiritual significance.
