Dun Urgadul is conveniently located just off the Tobermory to Glengorm road, opposite the Sgriob-ruadh Cheese Farm. The dun is pear-shaped and sits on the west end of a rocky ridge. While the walls have largely collapsed into debris, sections of the lowest courses of both the inner and outer facing stones remain visible. This allows visitors to gauge the original wall thickness of 3.7 meters, providing a sense of the fortress’s former strength.
Archaeological notes for this site mention a “double thickness” or revetment construction on the north-west side, a technique used to stabilize walls on steep slopes. Traces of this can be seen in the structural footprint. Additionally, a stony scarp across the ridge marks the location of an outer wall that once protected the vulnerable south-east approach.
Because of its easy access, Dun Urgadul is an excellent site for a quick historical stop. Visitors can walk up the ridge to see the defined layout of the fort and the clear evidence of stone-working, enjoying views back towards Tobermory and the surrounding farmland.
