Dunan Mor is situated at Laggan in Lochbuie, roughly 160 meters south-west of the MacLean Mausoleum. The site sits on a rocky outcrop protected by a cliff on the north-west side. The dun is now a low ruin, with the original wall reduced to a spread of stony debris about 2.1 meters thick. It is a subtle site, often overshadowed by the grander medieval and prehistoric monuments nearby, but it is an integral part of Lochbuie’s history.
The site is particularly interesting as a “multi-period” ruin. Inside and around the Iron Age dun, later rectangular foundations are visible. These are likely the remains of agricultural buildings or pens from a much later date, showing how the site was reused by successive generations. This layering of history confuses the original layout but adds to the story of the site’s continuity.
Visiting Dunan Mor is easy for those already exploring Lochbuie. It offers a vantage point over the loch and the fertile glen, illustrating why this area has been a hub of human activity from the stone circle builders to the Iron Age warriors and the MacLean clan chiefs.
