Eas Fors Cave

Eas Fors, meaning “waterfall waterfall” in a tautological combination of Gaelic and Norse, is a series of spectacular waterfalls on the west coast of Mull, near Ulva Ferry. While primarily known for its impressive cascades, the lower section of Eas Fors plunges directly into the sea over cliffs, creating a dramatic sea cave at its base. This cave is directly impacted by the immense force of the waterfall, making it a dynamic and powerful natural feature.

The main draw for visitors to Eas Fors is the stunning tiered waterfalls, which can be viewed from various points along the B8073 road. However, to truly appreciate the lower falls and the associated cave, a walk along the stony beach below the cliffs is recommended. This provides the safest and most dramatic vantage point for observing the water plunging into the sea and the cave opening. It’s crucial for visitors to exercise extreme caution, as the area can be very slippery and there are no barriers near the cliff edge.

Geologically, Eas Fors is a striking example of erosion acting upon Mull’s Tertiary basalt lava flows. The sheer force of the water over millions of years has carved through the volcanic rock, creating the waterfalls and the sea cave at their base. The captivating views across Loch Tuath to the Isle of Ulva add to the scenic appeal of this location.
