Eilean Amalaig is located in Loch Spelve, situated on a tidal islet on the north-east side of the loch. This is a salt-water site, which distinguishes it from the freshwater crannogs. The islet measures about 28 meters by 22 meters and was fortified to guard the anchorage below.

The primary visible feature is the ruin of a dry-stone wall on the south side of the islet. This wall is about 16 meters long and 1.9 meters thick. It still stands up to 2 meters high in places, making it one of the better-preserved crannog-style fortifications on the list. The wall faces the shore, directly overlooking a boat landing point.

This site was likely used by the MacLeans to control maritime traffic in Loch Spelve. Its location on a tidal islet meant it was naturally defended by the sea for half the day. It is a rugged, historical site that highlights the strategic importance of Mull’s sea lochs.
