Eilean Ban (“White Island”) is situated in Loch Frisa, the longest freshwater loch on Mull. It lies close to the south-west shore and is one of several small islands in the area. The island has been artificially improved with a defensive wall, the ruins of which encircle the site.
The wall was originally about 1.6 meters thick. Today, a few courses of facing stones are still in place on the north-east side, but the rest has collapsed into rubble. A notable feature is a boat inlet on the east side, which is indented into the island’s shape and protected by the wall, allowing safe docking for small vessels.
There are no internal buildings visible today. The style of the masonry suggests this site may have been used or reused in the late medieval period or the 17th century, rather than being purely prehistoric. It is a quiet, ruinous site that offers a glimpse into how islanders utilized the loch for transport and safety.
