Forestry and Land Scotland Mull FLS Woodlands is the national agency responsible for managing Scotland’s national forests and land, including substantial public estates across the Isle of Mull. The agency’s work encompasses sustainable timber production, habitat restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and providing vital outdoor recreation access. Their remit is critical to the island’s landscape, economy, and ecology, managing extensive conifer plantations alongside native woodlands, particularly in the northern areas of the island.
FLS manages several key forest areas on Mull that are popular with visitors and locals alike. The most prominent area is the Aros Park forest, situated near Tobermory, which offers excellent networks of waymarked trails for walking, running, and cycling, along with spectacular views of the Sound of Mull. Other important forestry areas are located around Salen and in the Glen Aros region. These woodlands are managed for multiple benefits, balancing commercial forestry with conservation efforts, such as supporting the reintroduction of White-tailed Sea Eagles and the protection of native species.
Access to FLS Woodlands is generally free, but car parking charges apply at managed visitor sites like Aros Park to help fund the upkeep of the facilities. Forestry and Land Scotland actively encourages responsible use of the forest by walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, requesting adherence to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Detailed information on trails, facilities, and timber operations can be found on their national website.
