Fort Cillchriosd is located on the summit of a rocky knoll immediately beside the road from Calgary to Calliach. The site is naturally defended on the north-east side by a vertical cliff, reducing the need for heavy fortification in that direction. On the south-west side, where the slope is more moderate, the inhabitants constructed a single dry-stone wall to enclose an area measuring approximately 50 meters by 23 meters.
Sadly, much of the stone from the fort has disappeared, likely repurposed for later building works such as local dykes or road construction. However, intermittent stretches of the lowest course of facing stones are still visible on the west and south-west sides, along with a thin spread of core material. These scant remains allow the imaginative visitor to reconstruct the outline of the original stronghold.
Despite its ruined state, Fort Cillchriosd is an accessible site for those exploring the north-west of Mull. Its proximity to the road makes it an easy stop for history enthusiasts visiting the nearby Calgary Bay. The site serves as a reminder of the density of Iron Age settlement in this fertile part of the island.
