Iona Heritage Centre

The Iona Heritage Centre is a small but significant museum located on the Isle of Iona, providing a rich insight into the island’s history, culture, and natural environment. It is housed in the former Church of Scotland Manse, a building that, along with the adjacent church, was designed by the celebrated engineer Thomas Telford in 1823. After the minister retired in 1985 and the Manse became vacant, a dedicated fundraising campaign led to its opening as the Heritage Centre in 1990, preserving a vital part of Iona’s architectural and community past.

The centre’s exhibitions delve into various facets of island life from the 18th century to the present day. Visitors can explore displays on the fishing and crofting communities, local schools and churches, and the contributions of Iona’s artists and craftworkers. It also features information on the island’s unique geology, diverse flora and fauna, and offers a chance to view historical photographs. The Iona Heritage Centre is conveniently located between the ferry jetty and Iona Abbey, making it an easy stop for visitors exploring the island on foot. It is generally open Monday to Saturday from early April until late October, typically from around 10:15 AM to 4:30 PM. The centre also includes a small shop selling relevant books and gifts, and “The Rookery Café,” which offers refreshments and home baking, often with outdoor seating in a sheltered garden. Admission is typically charged, with concessions available.
