Island Castaways Craignure
An Roth Community Enterprise Centre Craignure Isle of Mull PA65 6AY
Jane Ann’s Bothy Gometra offers extremely basic, remote accommodation on the uninhabited island of Gometra, located off the west coast of the Isle of Mull. Positioned in the small settlement of Baileclaidh near Gometra House, this is a truly back-to-basics experience aimed at seasoned kayakers, hillwalkers, and those seeking extreme solitude. The bothy is a traditional, unmodernised stone cottage, providing a unique insight into the island’s low-impact, off-grid way of life, with no mains electricity, shops, or services.
The bothy sleeps up to four guests (two single beds in one room and a double sofa bed in the sitting room). It features a very basic level of decoration and requires guests to bring their own sleeping bags, food, and a camping gas cooker. While it boasts a quaint indoor bath and sink, hot water and heat are only provided by a solid fuel woodburner, for which wood can be purchased in advance. Guests should note the toilet is a shared outdoor facility, reflecting the rustic nature of the stay.
Access to Jane Ann’s Bothy Gometra is highly challenging and requires significant preparation. Visitors must first take the ferry from Mull to the Isle of Ulva, and then undertake a demanding seven to eight-mile walk across Ulva and the causeway to Gometra. Due to the difficulty and the lack of facilities, it is not suitable for car-based visitors or those reliant on public transport. Booking is essential and is typically managed via Airbnb.
