Kilmore Church is a notable Church of Scotland congregation located in the village of Dervaig on the Isle of Mull. Positioned overlooking Loch a’Chumhainn, its distinctive “pencil tower” is a prominent landmark. The current church building was designed by architect P. MacGregor Chalmers and constructed between 1904 and 1905, replacing earlier structures on the same site that dated back to the 18th century, with the original parish church of Kilmore believed to have been built in 1755.
The architecture of Kilmore Church is distinctive, featuring a Norman style with a semi-circular apse and a gabled nave. The unique 63-foot round tower with a conical top is reminiscent of early Irish medieval towers, though it forms the west end of the church rather than being free-standing. The interior is equally striking, showcasing an Arts & Crafts style, a brightly painted apse that has historically caused some controversy, and seven large stained glass memorial windows. These beautiful windows, installed between 1905 and 1910, were designed and executed by the noted artist Stephen Adam, who had close ties to Mull.
Kilmore Church remains an active place of worship within the Parish of Kilninian and Kilmore, serving the north-west corner of Mull. It is usually open to visitors, allowing them to appreciate its unique architecture, historical artifacts like the 14th to 15th-century Kilmore Cross, and the impressive stained glass. The church underwent a significant restoration program completed around 2004-2005, preserving its beauty and ensuring its continued use as a spiritual and community hub in Dervaig.
