Ladder Cave

Ladder Cave is a notable natural feature located in the Airdmeanach area of Gribun on the Isle of Mull. This unique cave is characterized by a passage approximately 80 feet in length, which remains open at the top and is wide enough for two people to walk side-by-side. Its name originates from a historical breastwork, or defensive wall, once present at its entrance, requiring a ladder for entry.

Tradition holds that Ladder Cave served as a significant refuge for local people during periods of unrest, capable of accommodating a considerable number of individuals, estimated at around eighty armed men. Within its interior, a large flagstone, said to have been used as a table, along with other rudimentary conveniences, suggests its practical use as a temporary shelter or strategic hideaway during “troublous times” in the island’s history.

As one of several caves found along the rugged coastline of Airdmeanach, Ladder Cave stands out for its intriguing combination of natural formation and historical human adaptation.
