Loch Ba is a vast and scenic loch in central Mull, and this crannog is located near its north-west end, close to Gruline. The site consists of a small island composed entirely of loose boulders, distinguishing it from the solid rock of the natural islands. Surveys have shown it to be roughly circular, measuring about 12 meters in diameter.
The island stands about 1.2 meters above the water line, appearing as a simple pile of stones. There are no visible remains of a timber superstructure or defensive walling today. However, its position near the estate of Gruline suggests it may have served as a secure point for controlling the loch or as a refuge for the inhabitants of the nearby lands.
The site is easily missed if you don’t know what you are looking for, appearing as just another rocky outcrop in the water. However, its artificial construction marks it as a place of ancient habitation in one of the island’s most beautiful natural settings.
