Lochbuie Mausoleum, located in the ancient woodland near the historic Lochbuie House on the Isle of Mull, is a fascinating and atmospheric structure that serves as the final resting place for generations of the MacLaine of Lochbuie clan. Originally built as a chapel dedicated to St Kenneth and consecrated in 1500, it later became the family mausoleum. Although it fell into disuse before the 18th century, it was carefully restored in 1864 by Donald, 22nd of Lochbuie, giving it much of the appearance it retains today.

The mausoleum’s modest yet respectful design reflects the family’s enduring presence and deep roots in this secluded part of the island. Inside, visitors will find table tombs, mural monuments, and an octagonal font, all commemorating the MacLaine family lineage. Surrounded by mature trees and often cloaked in the quiet stillness of the forest, the site evokes a deep sense of timelessness and connection to Mull’s aristocratic heritage.

For those visiting, the mausoleum offers a poignant glimpse into the legacy of one of Mull’s oldest and most prominent clans. Its peaceful, remote setting adds to the contemplative atmosphere. Many who travel to Lochbuie also explore the broader estate, including the nearby ruins of Moy Castle and the stunning scenery around Lochbuie Bay. The walk to the mausoleum is part of the experience, leading through ancient woodlands where you may spot red deer or woodland birds, adding a natural dimension to the historical journey.

Access to the mausoleum is usually by foot from the main Lochbuie car park, along paths that are generally straightforward but can be uneven or muddy after rain. Appropriate footwear is recommended. As a place of remembrance and historical significance, visitors are asked to be respectful when exploring. Together with Moy Castle and the Lochbuie coastline, the mausoleum offers a richly layered insight into Mull’s past and the continuing legacy of the MacLaine family.
