The Fossil Tree, also known as MacCulloch’s Fossil Tree, is a remarkable geological feature situated on the Isle of Mull, specifically located beyond Burg Farm on the Ardmeanach peninsula. This ancient tree impression, preserved within the sea cliff, serves as a vivid testament to Mull’s fiery volcanic past. The surrounding landscape, characterized by dramatic, stepped basalt cliffs, was formed millions of years ago as molten lava flows cooled and solidified, capturing the tree in a unique natural mold.
Measuring over 12 meters in height and 1.5 meters in diameter, the Fossil Tree is an impressive sight, clearly demonstrating the scale of the ancient forest it once belonged to. Its discovery in 1819 by the renowned geologist John MacCulloch marked a significant moment in the study of Mull’s unique geological heritage. MacCulloch’s meticulous work contributed greatly to the understanding of the island’s formation and its rich fossil record.
Accessing the Fossil Tree involves a challenging and extensive walk, typically a 14-mile linear trek from the car park beyond Tiroran. The route encompasses rocky terrain and narrow cliff paths, culminating in a descent down a steep metal ladder securely attached to the cliff face to reach the site. Due to the demanding nature of the journey, joining a guided tour is highly recommended to ensure a safe and informative visit to this extraordinary geological landmark.
