Martyr’s Bay (Port nam Mairtear)

Martyr’s Bay, or Port nam Mairtear in Gaelic, is often the very first bay visitors to Iona encounter, as it’s situated immediately to the north of the ferry pier in the main village. This convenient location makes it a popular spot for a brief stop upon arrival or departure, offering easy access to the island’s amenities. While it may not boast the same expansive white sands as Iona’s more famous western beaches, it is nonetheless a charming and historically poignant inlet, providing lovely views across the Sound of Iona back towards the Isle of Mull.

The bay’s evocative name, “Martyr’s Bay,” is deeply rooted in Iona’s rich and often turbulent history. It is believed to be the place where the bodies of early Christian martyrs were brought ashore after being slain by Viking raiders in the 8th and 9th centuries. These individuals, steadfast in their faith, faced persecution during a period when the monastic community on Iona was repeatedly attacked. The name serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made and the profound resilience of the Christian tradition that continued to flourish on the island despite such brutal assaults.

Today, Martyr’s Bay is a peaceful and scenic spot, frequented by local boats and occasionally graced by the presence of seals. Its clear, shallow waters are often dotted with small fishing vessels and pleasure craft, contributing to a tranquil, working harbour atmosphere. Despite its sombre historical association, the bay is a beautiful and accessible point on Iona, offering a moment of quiet reflection on the island’s enduring legacy while enjoying the immediate surroundings of the vibrant village.
