The Memorial to Robert John Brown is a significant tribute located on the Tobermory Lighthouse Path in Tobermory, Isle of Mull. This memorial honours Robert John Brown, a pivotal figure in the history of the esteemed local business, Archibald Brown & Son, often referred to as Brown’s. His life story is deeply intertwined with the development and prosperity of Tobermory’s main street, reflecting the town’s enduring commercial and community spirit.
Robert John Brown took over the family business after his father, Archibald, passed away in 1898. A veteran of the Great War, Robert served as a Quarter Master in the Scottish Horse regiment and endured serious injuries at Gallipoli. Following his military service, he significantly diversified the business, moving away from groceries to focus on the sale of Harris tweed and Fair Isle knitwear. His obituary in The Scotsman famously recognized him for establishing one of the most prosperous businesses on Scotland’s West Coast, attracting a loyal clientele from across the globe.
The legacy of the Brown family in Tobermory began in 1860 when Archibald Brown, a former lighthouse keeper, purchased the premises at 21 Main Street. Originally built in 1830, this site, known as Brown’s Land, served as a general merchant selling a wide array of goods. Through generations, the Brown family managed, expanded, and adapted the business, turning it into a beloved institution. The memorial dedicated to Robert John Brown on the Lighthouse Path therefore serves as a tangible connection to this remarkable family’s contribution to Tobermory’s heritage.
