The Mull Rally is an iconic event in the UK motorsport calendar, transforming the tranquil Isle of Mull into a high-octane spectacle each October. Known for its demanding and uniquely challenging closed-road stages, it attracts rally enthusiasts and competitors from across the globe. What makes the Mull Rally truly special is its use of the island’s narrow, winding public roads, including some through forestry, often run in challenging night conditions, testing drivers and co-drivers to their limits. This has earned it a legendary status as one of Europe’s most arduous and exhilarating rallies.
The roots of the Mull Rally trace back to 1969, when Brian Molyneux, then Chairman of the 2300 Club (originally Mullard Motor Cycle and Car Club), conceived the idea during a family holiday on the island. Despite initial skepticism and public relations challenges faced by rallying elsewhere at the time, Molyneux’s vision and perseverance, combined with strong local support from figures like Provost Bobby MacLeod of Tobermory, brought the first “Tour of Mull” to life. This initial event in October 1969 saw 57 starters, laying the groundwork for what would become a celebrated tradition.
Over the decades, the Mull Rally has evolved, embracing closed-road sections since 1990, a significant milestone for UK rallying. It has become deeply woven into the fabric of island life, with a remarkable number of Mull residents actively participating as competitors and a vast volunteer force ensuring its smooth operation. The event fosters a strong sense of community, bringing together islanders, rally teams, and spectators for a thrilling weekend. Beyond the competitive aspect, the rally is a vibrant occasion for the island, marked by excitement, camaraderie, and a celebration of motorsport that has captivated generations.
