The Mushroom Stone Croggan Loch Spelve Mull is a remarkable geological feature situated on the remote Croggan peninsula, located on the eastern side of the Isle of Mull overlooking the beautiful Loch Spelve. This distinctive coastal rock formation has been sculpted by the sea and weather over centuries, resulting in its namesake appearance: a large, hard “hat” of rock resting upon a narrower, softer stone base. It stands approximately three metres high and is a perfect example of differential erosion where the softer rock has been undercut, leaving the harder strata exposed above.
To reach the Mushroom Stone Croggan, visitors must travel to the end of the public road near the small settlement of Croggan. The site is a perfect destination for those seeking a tranquil, off-the-beaten-track experience in a secluded corner of the island. The walk from the parking area follows a scenic track along the shore of Loch Spelve for a short distance before reaching the stone near the tip of the headland, where views open up across the Firth of Lorne.
The area around the Mull landmark is rich in wildlife, offering excellent opportunities for bird and otter spotting. While the Mushroom Stone is the star attraction, the surrounding Croggan headland also features the ruin of a former house at Leckruah and the nearby Allt nan Clar waterfall, making the hike approximately four kilometres round trip for the short version.
