The North West Mull Community Woodland Company Limited (NWMCWC) is a dynamic, community-owned enterprise established in 2006, dedicated to the sustainable management and development of significant land assets on the Isle of Mull. As a community company with charitable status, its core mission revolves around managing the Langamull and West Ardhu forests for the broad benefit of the local community. A major milestone in their history was the successful community acquisition of the entire Isle of Ulva in 2018, with ambitious plans centered on repopulation, economic renewal, and sustainable development of the island.
NWMCWC has undertaken numerous impactful projects that demonstrate its commitment to local prosperity and environmental stewardship. Key achievements include the construction of a 16.5km haul route, which has enabled the commercial extraction of previously landlocked timber. They have also developed a 95kW micro-hydro scheme, generating renewable energy and income, and pioneered the creation of nine Forest Crofts, all successfully let. Furthermore, the company established Island Woodfuels, which supplies woodchip and firewood across Mull, fostering local employment and a sustainable energy source.
Beyond woodland and energy, NWMCWC actively contributes to community housing initiatives and enhances recreational amenities within their managed lands, including archaeological site improvements and a Forest Schools program. Their efforts focus on improving biodiversity and providing long-term benefits to the environment and residents of North West Mull and Ulva. This holistic approach ensures the sustainable management of natural resources while significantly strengthening local resilience and the island economy.
