Port Ban Beach

Port Ban Beach, whose name beautifully translates from Gaelic as ‘White Port’, is widely regarded by many as one of Iona’s prettiest and most sheltered beaches. Located on the island’s serene west side, it offers a pristine stretch of white sand, largely composed of tiny crushed shells that give it a unique pearly shine and a soft feel underfoot. Framed by granite cliffs and backed by gentle dunes, this natural setting creates a delightful suntrap, making it a particularly inviting spot on sunny days.

The beach is renowned for its very gradual slope into the sea and the absence of strong tides, making it arguably the safest beach for swimming on Iona, and a firm favourite for families with young children wishing to paddle. When the tide comes in over the sun-warmed sand, the water can become surprisingly pleasant for an Atlantic dip. It’s a cherished spot for quiet relaxation, playing games, or simply enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.

Port Ban is also a treasured location for beachcombers, especially those seeking the tiny, delicate cowrie shells that are frequently washed ashore here. Visitors often spend hours searching for these coveted treasures, adding to collections built over many years. The path to Port Ban requires a walk, typically north along the coast from the Bay at the Back of the Ocean, passing through a gate and some small coves before reaching a sandy track down to this wonderfully secluded bay.
