This fortification is strategically positioned overlooking the entrance to Calgary Bay, about 300 meters north-north-west of the point of Rubha nan Oirean. Accessible from the area near the old Calgary pier, the fort takes advantage of the coastal topography to monitor maritime approaches to one of Mull’s most significant bays.
Like many coastal forts in the Hebrides, it likely utilized the steep slopes and rocky outcrops for primary defence, supplemented by constructed walls on the landward approaches. The site would have served as a watchtower and a refuge for the local population during times of unrest. Its location suggests it was part of a network of lookouts ensuring the safety of the fertile lands around Calgary.
Today, the site is best appreciated for its stunning views across the bay and out towards the islands of Coll and Tiree. While the physical remains may be weathered and overgrown, the strategic logic of the location remains obvious. It is a perfect spot for visitors to visualize the vigilance required by the Iron Age inhabitants of Mull.
