Sea Life Mull, known as Sea Life Surveys until 2021, originated from naturalist Richard Fairbairns’ deep fascination with the minke whale in 1982. This passion led to the creation of the Mull Cetacean Project, a dedicated research organization focused on investigating cetacean populations in the Inner Hebrides using non-invasive study methods across a 300-square-mile area north and west of Mull. To fund this vital research, the project initiated commercial whale watching holidays and day trips, combining wildlife observation with ongoing data collection by researchers and participating guests.
A significant development occurred in 1994 when the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust was established, taking over much of the educational and conservation activities that had been part of the Mull Cetacean Project. Later, in August 2016, Sea Life Surveys was acquired by Staffa Tours, a strategic move aimed at ensuring continued growth and maintaining the high standards of wildlife encounters by combining the strengths of both established businesses, further solidifying its presence in Mull’s tourism landscape.
Today, Sea Life Mull offers day cruises on its two well-equipped and meticulously maintained vessels, Highest Apple and Sula Beag. Both boats undergo rigorous annual inspections by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, ensuring safety and quality. These cruises provide exceptional opportunities for whale watching and general wildlife observation, with vessels designed for optimal viewing from the top deck, comfortable saloon areas, gyroscopic stabilizers, ample seating, and essential toilet facilities, promising a comfortable and immersive experience on the waters around Mull.
