St. Oran’s Cemetery, or Reilig Odhráin, stands as a profoundly sacred and historically unparalleled burial ground on the Isle of Iona, deeply intertwined with the very beginnings of Christianity in Scotland. Located adjacent to the renowned Iona Abbey and accessible via the ancient “Street of the Dead” (Srath nam Marbh), this venerable site is believed to have been in continuous use since St. Columba’s arrival in AD 563. Its name honours St. Oran, a companion of St. Columba, emphasizing its ancient lineage and spiritual significance as a place of rest for centuries of souls.

The cemetery is most famously known as the traditional resting place for an extraordinary number of early Scottish, Irish, and Norwegian kings. Historical records, including a 1549 inventory, attest to the burial of numerous monarchs within its hallowed ground from the 9th to the 11th centuries, making it one of Europe’s most significant royal burial sites. While many of the original royal grave markers have succumbed to time or been moved for preservation, the sheer historical weight of those said to be interred here imbues Reilig Odhráin with an almost mythical status, connecting it directly to the foundational narratives of early Scottish kingdoms.

Adding to its rich tapestry of history, the 12th-century St. Oran’s Chapel, considered Iona’s oldest intact ecclesiastical building, stands within the graveyard, further enhancing the site’s ancient atmosphere. While many of the most important medieval and earlier grave slabs have been transferred to the Iona Abbey Museum to safeguard them from erosion, the cemetery continues to serve its original purpose. It remains an active burial ground, notably hosting the grave of modern figures like John Smith, underscoring its unbroken link between ancient piety and contemporary remembrance on this revered island.
