The Standing Stone of Ulva is a striking prehistoric monument located on the picturesque Isle of Ulva, a smaller island accessible by ferry from Mull’s western coast. Situated in a field not far from Ulva’s church, this impressive monolith stands as a prominent feature against the island’s green landscape. It is typically found at grid reference NM 3816 3918, making it a key destination for those exploring Ulva’s ancient heritage.
This ancient stone is a substantial structure, typically described as standing over 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) high, with some sources suggesting it reaches around 3.5 meters. Its rough, natural shape reflects its origin, and it has remained upright for millennia, enduring the island’s weather. The Standing Stone of Ulva is often found in close proximity to, or associated with, a nearby burial cairn or tumulus, known as Carn na Saobhaidhe, suggesting a broader prehistoric funerary or ritual landscape in the area.
Dating back to the Bronze Age, roughly between 2500 and 800 BC, the exact purpose of the Standing Stone of Ulva, like many megalithic structures, remains a subject of archaeological speculation. It is generally believed to have served ritualistic, territorial, or astronomical functions for the early communities inhabiting the island. As a Scheduled Monument, the Standing Stone of Ulva is protected for its national importance, offering visitors a tangible and evocative link to the ancient inhabitants and prehistoric practices of the Inner Hebrides.
