Tobar na Gaoithe Tuath, which translates to the “Well of the North Wind,” is a sacred and historic well site on the Isle of Iona. Situated in the landscape southwest of Dun I, this location is steeped in ancient Gaelic folklore and spiritual significance. While its exact physical location has largely been lost over time, its reputation as one of Iona’s “magic wells” of antiquity has been preserved through historical records and local tradition.

In olden times, this well was a site of pagan ritual, where sailors and other islanders would bring offerings in an effort to “charm up a wind from the north.” This practice speaks to a fascinating history of pre-Christian rites on the island, linking the natural elements of the landscape to the daily lives and livelihoods of the community. The well was part of a set, each associated with a different cardinal direction, used to invoke the appropriate wind.

Today, Tobar na Gaoithe Tuath is best understood as a point of cultural interest rather than a visible landmark. The well itself appears to have gone missing sometime in the 20th century. Nonetheless, its enduring story provides a compelling glimpse into Iona’s mystical past and the ancient beliefs that predated its fame as a Christian centre. It remains a testament to the rich folklore embedded within the island’s terrain.
