The Tobermory Aero-Fac Wastewater Treatment Works is a critical infrastructure facility located on the Isle of Mull, specifically serving the town of Tobermory. Commissioned by Scottish Water in 2007, this plant utilizes the innovative Aero-Fac® fully biological, nature-based treatment system. This advanced technology was selected for its efficiency and sustainability, providing an environmentally sound method for managing wastewater from the local population and accommodating the significant seasonal variations associated with tourism.
A key advantage of the Tobermory Aero-Fac® system is its remarkably low energy consumption and minimal carbon footprint. It integrates renewable energy sources, including wind power, to reduce electricity requirements for aeration. Furthermore, the system incorporates a unique self-digesting sludge process, which effectively eliminates the need for complex sludge removal, handling, or costly transportation of waste off the island. This feature significantly reduces operational costs and environmental impact, making it a highly sustainable solution for the island community.
Designed to handle a population equivalent of over 1800, the Tobermory Aero-Fac® WWTW also features a septage reception centre, capable of processing septic tank sludge collected from across the entire Isle of Mull. This ensures comprehensive wastewater management for both piped sewage and private systems. The plant consistently produces high-quality treated effluent, discharged safely into Tobermory Bay, reflecting its commitment to protecting the local marine environment and supporting the long-term ecological health of the area.
