Tobermory Pier, a focal point of Mull’s vibrant capital, boasts a rich history intertwined with the very foundation and growth of the town. Originally conceived as a fishing port in the late 18th century, with designs influenced by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford, the first pier, “Fishermen’s Pier,” was constructed in 1814. This marked a significant step in establishing Tobermory as a key maritime hub. Over the centuries, the pier adapted to changing needs, from accommodating steamers that linked Tobermory to Glasgow in the 1820s, fostering a flourishing tourism business, to playing a vital role during the Second World War as part of HMS Western Isle, a naval base for escort vessel training.

Beyond its functional past, Tobermory Pier is steeped in local lore and has witnessed moments of grand significance. Legend persists of a Spanish galleon, laden with gold from the defeated Armada, sinking in Tobermory Bay in 1588 – a tale that has spurred numerous, albeit unsuccessful, salvage attempts over the years. The pier also saw royal attention with a visit from Queen Victoria on the Royal Yacht “Victoria and Albert” in 1847, enhancing Tobermory’s reputation as a desirable stop on the “Royal Route.” More recently, the colourful buildings lining the harbour, prominently featuring the pier, gained international fame as the setting for the much-loved children’s TV series, Balamory.

Today, Tobermory Pier remains a lively and essential part of the town’s identity and visitor experience. It serves as a working harbour for fishing boats and yachts, and is a departure point for popular whale watching and wildlife cruises that explore the rich marine life of the Hebrides. Visitors can stroll along the pier, soak in the picturesque views of the iconic brightly painted buildings, and witness the daily comings and goings of vessels. Recent developments, such as the Aros Waterfront project, are further enhancing access and facilities, ensuring the pier continues to be a welcoming and engaging hub for both locals and tourists exploring the charm of the Isle of Mull.
