Torr a’ Chlachain is a significant fort located in Glen Bellart, approximately 565 meters south-west of Torr a’ Chlachain Farmhouse. It is sited on a prominent ridge and is one of a pair of forts in the glen, the other being Torr Aint. The fort is an irregular oval in plan, with a single massive wall enclosing a space of 49 meters by 26 meters.
The defensive wall was a substantial structure, varying between 3.0 and 4.3 meters in thickness. Although parts of the wall have fallen away down the steep slopes, long stretches of the lowest course of outer facing stones remain in place, particularly on the north-west and south-east sides. The entrance is located on the south-east side and is about 1 meter wide.
This fort is of particular interest to archaeologists because of its relationship with the nearby Torr Aint fort. The two sites share similar construction and location characteristics, offering a unique opportunity to study Iron Age settlement patterns and social structures in the glen. For visitors, it offers a chance to see a well-defined defensive site in a beautiful inland setting.
