Torr Aint is the companion fort to Torr a’ Chlachain, located about 1.3 kilometers to the east in Glen Bellart. It sits on the summit of a steep-sided, isolated ridge, situated a short distance south of the deserted settlement of Aintuim. The fort consists of a single wall surrounding a substantial interior space measuring 70 meters by 30 meters.
Although the site has been robbed of stone over time, impressive evidence of its original grandeur remains. Long stretches of the outer face of the wall are still in place, composed of massive boulders measuring up to 1.2 meters in height. These “megalithic” style stones indicate the immense effort and organization required to construct the fort. The entrance faces north-west and is approximately 1.2 meters wide.
The interior of the fort has been ploughed in more recent times, which may have disturbed archaeological layers, but the site remains an imposing feature in the landscape. Together with Torr a’ Chlachain, it dominates the glen, suggesting a densely populated and well-defended valley during the Iron Age. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in the scale of prehistoric engineering on Mull.
