Cnoc a’ Chalmain, also known as the Catholic House of Prayer, is a significant spiritual retreat located on the Isle of Iona. Its name, which translates to “Hill of the Dove” from Gaelic, reflects the peaceful and contemplative atmosphere it offers. The establishment of this house of prayer marked a historic moment, creating a permanent Roman Catholic presence on Iona for the first time in 400 years when it was officially opened by Archbishop Keith O’Brien in the spring of 1997, coinciding with the 1400th anniversary of St. Columba’s death.
The primary purpose of Cnoc a’ Chalmain is to provide a peaceful place of prayer and retreat for pilgrims of all faiths. Within the house is a beautiful, simple Oratory where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved, available for Mass and private prayer. This central feature allows visitors and residents to engage in quiet contemplation and spiritual nourishment. The house accommodates guests in single and twin rooms, offering a unique opportunity for a tranquil stay on the sacred island.
Managed by The Colmcille Trust, Cnoc a’ Chalmain aims to foster Christian unity and become an integral part of the Iona community, working for the well-being of the entire island. It offers daily Eucharistic services and encourages ecumenical co-operation with other Christian groups on Iona, including the Iona Community. The house is designed to be a welcoming space where individuals can experience peace and quiet, contributing to Iona’s enduring legacy as a profound spiritual destination.
