Columba’s Chapel at Bishop’s House

Columba’s Chapel is located within Bishop’s House, a retreat house for the Scottish Episcopal Church on the Isle of Iona. Bishop’s House itself was built in 1894 and was originally named Saint Columba’s House, with its central chapel dedicated to the saint. Founded by Bishop Alexander Chinnery-Haldane, it was established as a place for prayer, study, contemplation, and Eucharist, and despite its change in name, it has remained a significant spiritual hub.

The chapel, though relatively modern compared to Iona’s ancient monastic sites, is an integral part of the spiritual life at Bishop’s House. It provides a quiet and reflective space for both guests of the retreat house and members of the public. Services are held daily from March to October and weekly during the winter months, offering a contemporary connection to the island’s enduring Christian heritage. The chapel’s artwork includes notable Ritchie brasses and newer windows by glass artist Anita Pate, reflecting a continuing artistic tradition on Iona.

Bishop’s House, including Columba’s Chapel, functions as the oldest retreat house on the island, welcoming individuals and groups for over a century. It is situated close to Iona Abbey, overlooking the tranquil Sound of Iona. The chapel is open to the public for private prayer, inviting all to experience its peaceful atmosphere regardless of their faith tradition. It contributes significantly to Iona’s ongoing role as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual renewal.
