Dun Aoidhean is located on the tidal island of Erraid, positioned on a hilltop at the north-east corner. The site is very overgrown, and the remains are scant. What was once a fortification dating to roughly 250 AD is now primarily visible as a scattering of stones and the faint outline of an enclosure adapted to the natural rock.
The dun takes advantage of the craggy topography of Erraid, which provides natural defense. There are no high walls standing; instead, the site is defined by the shape of the summit and the debris of the original ramparts. It serves more as a historical footprint than a structural ruin.
Visiting requires crossing the tidal sands to Erraid. The value of this site lies in its location and atmosphere, offering views over the Sound of Iona that have remained unchanged since the Iron Age inhabitants kept watch here.
