The Glengorm Wildlife Project, situated on the stunning Glengorm Estate just five miles outside Tobermory, is a dedicated initiative focused on improving knowledge and aiding conservation management of Mull’s natural heritage. Established in 2013 by the Nelson family, who have owned Glengorm Castle and its expansive 5,000-acre estate since the 1970s, the project aims to strike a balance between farming and conservation. At its heart is the Glengorm Visitor Centre, located next to the coffee shop, which serves as a hub for learning about the estate’s rich wildlife and history, offering insights into recent sightings, and providing a gateway to engaging guided walks and activities.

For visitors, the Glengorm Wildlife Project offers unparalleled opportunities to immerse themselves in Mull’s diverse ecosystems. The estate boasts all of Mull’s charismatic species, alongside several rarities like the slender Scotch burnet moth, found nowhere else in the world. Guided walks led by an experienced ranger are a highlight, tailored to suit your schedule and interests. These walks, ranging from two-hour historical or sea cliff explorations to longer four or six-hour treks, are taken at a relaxed pace, allowing ample time for wildlife observation and enjoying the magnificent scenery. You can anticipate spotting white-tailed eagles and golden eagles soaring overhead, along with otters, red deer, and a variety of seabirds and marine mammals from the coastal vantage points overlooking the Sea of the Hebrides.

Beyond the guided walks, the Glengorm Wildlife Project actively engages visitors through various events and activities throughout the year, from kids’ crafts to workshops on nature writing, herb walks, and even marine mammal watches in partnership with organizations like the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. These initiatives are crucial for sharing the passion for nature and safeguarding the future of wild places by involving the public in citizen science and conservation efforts. While some walks involve rough, uneven terrain and require a reasonable level of fitness, the project strives to be accessible and aims to educate and inspire all ages about the importance of protecting Mull’s unique biodiversity.
