Inverlussa Mussel Farm is a family-run business located in Loch Spelve, on the Isle of Mull. For over thirty years, they have been producing high-quality, rope-grown mussels in the pristine, Grade A waters of the loch. Their commitment to sustainable and natural farming methods results in mussels known for their sweet, fresh, and salty taste, which have earned them the title of “Best Mussel Producer in Scotland” on multiple occasions.
The farm employs a continuous rope culture system, a method they pioneered in Scotland after studying similar operations in New Zealand. This efficient and environmentally friendly approach allows them to produce up to 500 tons of mussels per year. Inverlussa mussels are available for purchase directly from their farm via an honesty box, offering a unique opportunity to buy incredibly fresh, locally sourced seafood. They also supply major supermarkets through the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group, ensuring their delicious mussels reach a wider audience.
Inverlussa takes pride in the quality and sustainability of their product. Their mussels feed naturally on plankton in the loch’s rich tidal flows, requiring no additional feed or freshwater. The farm employs a marine biologist to monitor water quality and has developed its own pre-harvesting water analysis system. This dedication to quality and environmental responsibility has earned them accreditation from Friends of the Sea for Sustainable Fish Production, making their mussels a healthy and eco-conscious choice.
